Description
A 6ml liquid flux is a small, 0.2oz container of chemical flux, often packaged in a refillable pen with a tip and brush, used in soldering to clean metal surfaces and promote proper solder adhesion. While specific types vary, common 6ml liquid fluxes include acidic “steel flux” for soldering metals like copper, brass, and iron, and No-Clean or Rosin Mildly Activated (RMA) fluxes for electronics, which leave behind no or minimal residue after soldering and can be used with leaded or lead-free solder.
Key Characteristics of 6ml Liquid Flux:
Quantity:
“6ml” refers to the volume of the liquid flux.
Packaging:
It often comes in a refillable pen with a brush or tip for precise application.
Purpose:
Flux prepares a metal surface for soldering by removing oxides and impurities. It also helps prevent new oxidation from forming during the high-heat process.
Applications:
The type of flux determines its use:
For Metals (Steel/Copper/Brass): Acidic fluxes are used for soldering steel, iron, nickel, and copper.
For Electronics (PCBs): No-Clean or Rosin Mildly Activated (RMA) fluxes are designed for electronic components and can be used for both leaded and lead-free soldering.
Types of Flux in a 6ml Pen:
Steel Flux:
Acidic and designed for non-copper metal surfaces like steel, copper, and brass. It helps in the soldering of stainless steel and is good for battery cell soldering.
No-Clean Flux:
Alcohol-based, leaving no residue, which means it does not need to be cleaned after soldering. It is VOC and halide-free.
Rosin Mildly Activated (RMA) Flux:
Made from pine tree sap and dissolved in a solvent like alcohol, this flux is slightly acidic and ideal for electronics applications.
Important Considerations:
Surface Compatibility:
Always check the product’s description to ensure it’s compatible with your target metal or PCB components.
Residue:
“No-Clean” fluxes require no cleaning, while RMA fluxes may need cleaning with isopropyl alcohol (IPA).
Temperature:
Some liquid fluxes should be stored refrigerated, and others may need time to reach room temperature before use.
